Hannah Hoch

Hannah Hoch

Born in Germany in 1889, Hoch was the only female member of the early Dada movement and was primarily known for her pioneering work in the new art form, photomontage. She was also a gifted painter. Despite Weimar Berlin’s taste for the avant-garde and new ideas, she still had to tolerate dismissal as an “unserious” female from her male counterparts. She managed to keep her head down during the Nazi regime and survived the war, despite being targeted as a “degenerate artist ” along with many of her contemporaries. After the war, she resumed her career and eventually enjoyed international acclaim during her long life. She died in 1978.
